Seekh Kebab (Low Carb Appetizer)

I have vivid memories of eating seekh kebab with a crispy paratha at a very authentic restaurant in Pakistan. My daughter would have it with a sweet halwa (made of cream of wheat, sugar and milk) as she found the kebabs spicy. So now when I make these kebabs at home with this quick recipe in the air fryer, it is a treat! And BTW my kebabs are not spicy. Before the air fryer days, I would either make them in a pan or in the oven. That was much more time consuming. This recipe was passed on to me by my sister Qamer who lives in Pakistan. I added spinach to make it a little different and more nutritious. I remember making kebabs for my grandson when he had started eating solids. In his kebabs I would also add finely grated carrots, bell peppers, and cumin salt and I’d also add pepper for seasoning. In this way we both ate similar foods. He loved them!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb organic ground beef
  • 2 cups finely chopped organic spinach
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion ground in the blender with extra water removed by strainer
  • 2 tbsp garlic ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp gharam masala
  • 1 tbsp shan seekh kebab masala (seasoning)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 lemon

Recipe:

Mix all of the above ingredients together except for the lemon. You can run the mix through a food processor. Keep it in an airtight container overnight in the fridge. Roll out kebabs from the mix and cook it in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 360 degrees.

The mix should be sufficient for three batches of kebabs in a large air fryer. Squeeze some lemon juice on the kebabs right before serving.

Enjoy with raita made of greek yogurt, cilantro and green chillies blended together. This kind of sauce is also available in Costco. It is called the cilantro lime sauce.

You can enjoy this kebab with nan, sauce and onions which is the authentic way or you can enjoy with salad!
